Arab-Sassanian coin with the name of Yazdgird III, frozen in 20 Yazdgird Era.
Date
31 AH / 652 CE.
Contents
Obverse field: Typical late Arab-Sassanian bust with name of Yazdgird III (in Middle Persian). Obverse margin: jayyid ("Valid" or "Good").
Reverse field: Typical Arab-Sassanian fire-altar with attendants with mint (AY?) and date in Middle Persian (20 Yazdgird Era), i.e., 31 AH / 652 CE.
Comments
Weight = 4.2 gms. This is a posthumous coin in the name of Yazdgird III.
These are some of the earliest dated Islamic coins and believed to have been struck for about 15 years.
